A pregnancy outside the uterus can happen if you smoking during pregnancy
In this time, we can see that woman pregnancy also smoking like many men in the world, but many woman pregnancy are not realize with damage effect of smoking during pregnancy.
Pregnant women are strongly urged not to smoke cigarette during pregnancy because these substances have been shown to have damaging effects on developing fetuses and problems in the child grows.
If you are pregnant and you smoke during your pregnancy, you may harm your baby as well as yourself. The harmful substances of smoke through your blood stream and into the placenta. The placenta provides nutrients to the fetus during pregnancy, and it will also transfer harmful substances taken by the mother. That means that when mom has smoke a cigarette, her baby has smoke a cigarette, too. Cigarette smoking delivers thousands of chemicals to an unborn baby, some of which are well-documented reproductive toxins. For example, Carbon Monoxide. (University of Michigan health system, 2008). Besides that, some of chemicals substances that your lungs absorb from cigarette when you smoke cause the vessels supplying blood to the uterus to become narrower. This means that the baby gets less oxygen and food from the blood. As a result, the baby has a greater risk of low birth weight. The baby also has a greater chance of being born too early. Babies who are both underweight and born early have more problems during and after delivery. Other effect of that, infants and children who are exposed to smoke (passive smoking) are more likely to have more colds, lung problems, and ear infections.
Many other things can happen with pregnancy if you smoking during pregnancy, such as:
1. Preterm birth
Smoking during pregnancy is also a risk factor for very preterm birth. (University of Michigan Health System, 2008)
2. Stillbirths
Stillbirth can cause of too little amniotic fluid (Weill Cornell medical College, 2003)
3. Low-birth-weight babies
Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have low-birth weight babies. (Shands Health Care, 2007)
Are more likely to be born with low birth weight, less than 2500 grams or 5.5 pounds. (Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, 2007)
4. Asthma
Being exposed to mom’s cigarette smoking during pregnancy is a risk factor after birth for wheezing and asthma in children up to two years old. (Boyse, 2006)
Smoking increases the risk of physician-diagnosed asthma and wheezing during childhood (Lee and Gallant, 2002)
5. Pregnancy complications
The following are some of the more common pregnancy complications:
¨ Amniotic fluid complications
Too smuch or too little amniotic fluid can be a problem with the pregnancy. Too much fluid can put excessive pressure on the mother’s uterus, leading to preterm labor, or can cause pressure on the mother’s diaphragm leading to breathing difficulties and too little fluid may indicate birth defects, growth retardation, or stillbirth.
¨ Bleeding
Bleeding in late pregnancy may be a sign of placental complications or a vaginal (cervical) infection.
Even before delivery, mothers who smoke have a greater chance of having vaginal bleeding. (Shands Health Care, 2007)
¨ Ectopic pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy is the development of the fetus outside of the uterus. It can occur in the fallopian tubes, cervical canal, or the pelvic or abdominal cavity. The cause of an ectopic pregnancy is usually a blocked fallopian tube.
Even before delivery, mothers who smoke have a greater chance of having an ectopic pregnancy. (Shands Health Care, 2007)
So, I think that smoking during pregnancy cause of ectopic pregnancy and it can be very dangerous to the mother.
¨ Miscarriage / Fetal loss
Miscarriage is the loss of the fetus up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Most miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and usually due to fetal abnormalities.
Even before delivery, mothers who smoke have a greater chance of having a miscarriage. (Shands Health Care, 2007)
So, I think that smoking during pregnancy cause of miscarriage.
¨ Placental complications
placental complications may occur, including:
ü Placental abruption
The placenta becomes detached from the uterine wall prematurely (placental abruption) leading to bleeding and a reduction of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.
ü Placenta previa
Placenta previa is a condition in which the placenta is attached close to or covering the cervix (opening into the uterus).
¨ Preeclampsia / Eclampsia
Preeclampsia, we can also called toxemia, is a condition characterized by pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and swelling due to fluid retention and the he cause of preeclampsia is unknown until now.
(Weill Cornell medical college, 2003)
6. Premature birth
Have about 30% higher odds of being born prematurely. (Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, 2007)
7. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
SIDS stands for sudden infant death syndrome. This term describes the sudden, unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year of age. Some people call SIDS "crib death" because many babies who die of SIDS are found in their cribs. But, cribs don’t cause SIDS. (Cleveland Clinic, 2008).
Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to 10 percent of all infant deaths and It is the main risk factor contributing to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). (Boyse, 2006). Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the sudden death of a baby from unknown causes before the baby is one year old. Most SIDS deaths occur when babies are between one and four months old
So, I think that smoking during pregnancy cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
In conclusion, smoking during pregnancy can cause much damage effect to the mother and also to the infant. I think, if you are planning to become pregnant, you should quit smoking before you try to get pregnant. And if you are already pregnant, you should quit smoking as soon as possible. Because cutting down or stopping smoking during pregnancy reduces the risks. If you stop smoking early in pregnancy, the risks for your baby are about the same as for women who are nonsmokers. In my opinion, if you cannot stop smoking on your own, seek help and counseling to stop smoking. There for, you and your baby are healthy.
